Department of Family Medicine is committed to a health care system
that accepts any problem a patient may have regardless of their
age or sex. Family physicians definitively manage approximately
ninety-five percent of the conditions presented to them and follow
their patients through any needed referrals or hospitalizations.
Keeping people healthy and detecting disease as early as possible
are major emphases of the Department’s teaching, practice
and research.
The Department
collaborates with practicing physicians throughout the State to
teach family medicine to medical students
and residents and also to study the phenomenon of family medicine
in the community as seen in doctors’ offices. The Department
is interested in practice-based research focused on health promotion,
disease prevention and containing health care costs, as well as
the natural history of diseases.
