Physicians
in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provide state-of-the-art
care in all areas of women’s health as well as health maintenance,
health screening, and family planning services. Specialty areas
include benign gynecology, high-risk obstetrics, infectious disease,
infertility, fetal medicine, genetics and gynecologic oncology.
Departmental activities in perinatal medicine are coordinated with
the Department of Pediatrics to provide integrated infant and fetal
care.
Gynecology
General Gynecology
This program
offers routine annual gynecologic examinations, cancer screening,
and family planning services including preconception
counseling. Contraceptive choices include Depo-Provera and IUD.
Evaluation and treatment is available for routine and complex gynecologic
problems including abnormal pap smears, abnormal bleeding, amenorrhea,
endometriosis, PMS, painful menses, pelvic pain, painful intercourse,
vaginal infections and itching, sexual dysfunction, urinary or bowel
incontinence, pelvic relaxation and prolapse, emergency contraception,
unplanned pregnancy or early pregnancy complications, breast symptoms
or lumps, sexually transmitted diseases and symptoms related to
menopause or perimenopause. Treatments available include outpatient
laser, cryosurgery, and LEEP as well as a full range of outpatient
and inpatient surgical procedures.
University WomanCare Practice
This group of
full-time faculty physicians maintains a general obstetrics and
gynecologic private practice at our Fitzsimons location with a satellite
office in Boulder. This practice offers patients the opportunity
to be followed in a private practice setting under the auspices
of the University, with personalized care and privacy, but with
all the resources of a world-class medical facility immediately

Gynecologic
Oncology
Gynecologic Oncology
The Gynecologic
Oncology Practice at The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Hospital is dedicated
to the treatment of women known to have, or suspected of having,
a gynecologic malignancy and includes cancers of the cervix, endometrium,
fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, vagina, and vulva as well as gestational
trophoblastic tumors.
Multidisciplinary
consultative services with radiation oncology, medical oncology,
and pathology are provided. Surgical and chemotherapy treatments,
if indicated, are provided through this program. Other services,
such as radiation therapy or bone marrow transplant, are coordinated
with the appropriate physicians. The gynecologic oncology practice
is a member of and actively supports enrollment in clinical trials
sponsored by the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and the Southwest
Oncology Group (SWOG) as well as supporting in-house protocols of
the University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC). Members of the

OBSTETRICS
General Obstetrics
Routine obstetrical
care for women and teens, including preconception counseling, prenatal
care, delivery and antepartum care.
High-Risk Pregnancy
Maternal and
Obstetrical Complications. Specialists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine,
in conjunction with a specialist in Internal Medicine (with specific
interest in complications of pregnancy), are available to see women
with medical complications such as pregnancy induced hypertension,
chronic hypertension, cardiac disease, venous thromboembolic disorders,
hematologic disorders, pulmonary disease, infections, gastrointestinal
disorders, renal disease, collagen vascular disease and neoplastic
disease. This Program also offers evaluation and management of pregnancies
complicated by premature labor, premature rupture of the membranes,
pregnancy induced hypertension, chorioamnionitis, unexplained vaginal
bleeding, multiple gestations, and other obstetrical complications.
Diabetes in Pregnancy
Staffed by a
specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, an Internist with an interest
in diabetes, a nurse coordinator, a dietitian and a social worker,
this clinic provides evaluation and management of both gestational
and insulin dependent diabetics.
Fetal Complications
Faculty physicians
provide consultation and management of patients referred for fetal
complications such as Rh disease, intrauterine growth restriction,
macrosomia, hydramnios, or other fetal abnormalities. A Fetal Infection
program offers consultations to physicians in the Western States.
Adolescent Pregnancy Clinic
This comprehensive
care program for adolescent mothers, combines the services of an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, a Certified Nurse Midwife,
Pediatrician, Nutritionist, and a Social Worker. The clinic is designed
to promote a healthy pregnancy for teen mothers in a caring and
supportive atmosphere.
Infectious Disease
Specialists
in infectious diseases in pregnancy provide comprehensive care of
women whose pregnancy is complicated by bacterial vaginosis, common
sexually transmitted diseases, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, herpes,
vaginitis, and other infectious diseases.
Prenatal Diagnosis and Genetics
Specialists
provide prenatal detection, evaluation and genetic counseling for
patients and/or pregnancies complicated by genetic disorders. These
services are also provided for fetal abnormalities detected during
the course of pregnancy. Procedures include amniocentesis, fetal
blood sampling, chorionic villus sampling and comprehensive ultrasonographic
evaluations. A Fetal Cardiovascular Center provides specialized
diagnostic services to patients from the Rocky Mountain area.
University Maternal-Fetal Medicine Practice
This practice
is a private practice composed of faculty physicians with certification
in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine. This group
provides comprehensive care to women throughout the Rocky Mountain
region. With our faculty’s extensive experience in high-risk
obstetrics, the presence of state-of-the-art prenatal diagnosis
facilities, and availability of consultants in every medical and
surgical field, this practice offers unique and personalized care

University WomanCare
Practice
This practice
provides obstetrical services and prenatal care and delivery for
patients with routine or difficult pregnancies. Patients are followed
in a private practice setting within the University, with personalized

The Colorado High Risk Maternity and Newborn Program
This program
combines the services of both Perinatology and Neonatology to provide
a continuum of care for women with high-risk pregnancies, their
fetuses and neonates. Services provided include prenatal diagnosis
and genetics, treatment and management of complex obstetrical conditions,
preterm labor and care for the very small and premature baby. Henry Galan,

Platte River Perinatal Center
A prenatal diagnosis
center at 1772 Platte Street, Denver, is available for the convenience
of patients and referring providers. Our faculty provide specialized
prenatal diagnosis in a facility that easily accommodates patients
from the central, western and southern metropolitan area.
Faculty at the
Center provide comprehensive ultrasound examinations during the
first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy, including nuchal
translucency screening, comprehensive genetic ultrasound, and a
state-of-the-art ultrasound evaluation of fetal growth and placental
function. Referrals are welcome from the primary obstetrician-gynecologist,
family medicine physician, or certified nurse midwife who suspects
a fetal anomaly or who wants a consultation for a potential genetic
problem. We provide excellent follow-up and reporting to the primary
caregiver regarding our findings.

REPRODUCTIVE
ENDOCRINOLOGY AND INFERTILITY
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
This program provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all endocrine and reproductive disorders, including infertility, pregnancy loss, ovulatory problems, uterine or tubal abnormalities, reproductive tract surgery, endometriosis and menopause. All aspects of in-vitro fertilization and advanced reproductive treatments are offered on site. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis for couples with hereditary diseases is also available. Faculty physicians, Drs. William Schlaff, Deborah Smith and Ruben Alvero are board certified reproductive endocrinologists. Male problems are also treated as part of a comprehensive approach to infertility by Dr. Randall B. Meacham, a subspecialty trained urologist. Additional services are provided by the Director of the Reproductive Medicine Laboratory and psychologists Drs. Lynn Blyth and Joan Manheimer.
Reproductive Medicine Practice (Colorado Springs)
The Advanced Reproductive Medicine service has opened a
satellite office in the Briargate Medical Campus in Colorado
Springs in order to provide more convenient access for patients
and referring providers in Colorado Springs and southern
Colorado. This office is open daily and staffed by the full time faculty
in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility along with specialized
nurses. This office provides monitoring of ovulation
induction and in vitro fertilization patients as well as other reproductive
