The Department of Pathology is a major referral center for the diagnosis of unusual diseases in the Rocky Mountain region. Physicians in the Department are widely known for bone biopsy studies and research on the use of new technology for detection and treatment of disease.

Research and referral areas within the Department include:

Bone Biopsies
Quantitative morphologic analysis of biopsies of metabolic bone disease. Research in metabolic bone disease and renal failure.

Cytopathology
Special expertise in the diagnosis of cytology specimens, use of Fine Needle Aspiration for rapid diagnosis, and Cytyc ThinPrep PAP Test for liquid-based cervical cytology and HPV diagnosis.

Cancer Consultation Service
Second opinion on tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Cardiovascular Diseases
Special expertise in endomycardial biopsy diagnosis.

Computerized Morphometry
Quantitative diagnosis using advanced techniques for image analysis including Chromavision ACIS technology.

Cytogenetics
Full service cytogenetics laboratory providing efficient routine testing, as well as complex characterization in Prenatal Diagnosis, Cancer Cytogenetics, Postnatal Cytogenetics, Tissue Cytogenetics, Fluorexcence in situ Hybridization (FISH), and cell culture for biomedical and molecular studies.

Dermatopathologic Diseases
Histopathologic assessment of skin disease.

Electron Microscopy
Diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases by ultrastructural features.

Endomyocardial Biopsies
Diagnosis of heart diseases by light and electron microscopy.

Flow Cytometry
Measurement of different parameters in dissociated cells for tumor diagnosis.

Histology
Full service histology capability including routine H & E, special stains, advanced immuno histochemistry and in situ hybridization.

Lymphoma/Hematopathology
Special expertise in the application of histochemical techniques to determine types of lymphoma and leukemia.

Molecular Diagnosis
Molecular probes are used to study gene rearrangements in lymphoma/leukemia, mutations in solid tumors, and hepatitis C and human papillomavirus detection.

Neuropathology
Diagnosis of general neurological diseases.

Pediatric and Perinatal Pathology
Molecular pathology, pediatric tumor pathology, metabolic and heritable disease pathology, developmental pathology, pediatric surgical and autopsy pathology.

Prostate Pathology
Application of immunologic morphometric and techniques for specific identification.

Renal Biopsies
Diagnosis of kidney diseases by light and electron microscopy, and histochemistry.

Tumor Markers
Identification of various antigens present in tumors for diagnosis.

Special Coagulation
Diagnosis of blood coagulation diseases using advanced biochemical and molecular techniques.
